Production [edit]

The original stage version of the lyrics was inverse in the making of the 1961 movie version of W Side Story due to a alter in the scene's occurrence. Making 'I experience pretty and witty and bright/And I pity/Any daughter who isn't me this evening' into 'I feel pretty, and witty and gay/And I compassion/Whatever daughter who isn't me today'. In the movie this evening scene was changed to the daytime, then the rhyming words "vivid" and "this night" were changed to "gay" and "today".[two] [3] The lyrics were changed dorsum to their original course for the 2021 film version.[four]

The vocal was cut from the 2019 Broadway revival in guild to streamline the plot and condense it to a 90-minute intermissionless prove.

Steven Spielberg and Sondheim initially wanted to cut the song from the 2021 film, with the old questioning whether the upbeat vocal would even so work without an suspension betwixt it and the rumble.[5] It was ultimately due to the intervention of Tony Kushner that the song remained, equally Spielberg later explained, "Tony [Kushner] explained to me, and then I explained to Stephen... that this is the first fourth dimension in our story that the unabridged audition is ahead of Maria'due south story. And the audience will feel very protective of her because nosotros know she's about to find out."[6]

Synopsis [edit]

In the musical and 2021 film version, Maria is not yet aware that her love, Tony, has just killed her blood brother Bernardo, while in the 1961 moving-picture show version, the vocal occurs before Bernardo'due south death. In the conjugal store where she works (in the 1961 film; Gimbels in the 2021 flick), Maria sings about beingness happy and feeling beautiful considering she is "loved by a pretty wonderful boy", while her coworkers tease her about her silly behavior. Robert Cummings of AllMusic comments that the vocal "features one of Bernstein's more memorable melodies: its kickoff iv notes, deliciously rhythmic in their rising contour, repeat, then are reduced to three, and then to two. …Bernstein's instrumentation colors the music with a Latin character…and and then does the girls' chorus that enters midway through. Stephen Sondheim's lyrics deftly capture Maria's bliss and newfound sense of confidence".[7]

Birmingham Mail described the vocal as "delightful",[viii] while The Tab deemed it a "archetype".[ix] Applause Meter chosen information technology "sweetly charming"[10] and VCOnStage called it "operatic".[xi]
